Archaeology Quest

Pick up your trowel and spade and become a real archaeologist this week at Avoncroft for National Archaeology Week! Get the full archaeology experience as you discover finds, try out some experimental archaeology and even conduct your own mini excavation!

 

 

Robin Hood and King Arthur’s Training Camp

Have a go at becoming a legendary hero this weekend. Enter Robin Hood’s Camp and try archery and a castle catapult range. See if you can spot all the Merry Men. Then head over to King Arthur’s Camp and meet dragons, dress as a knight, try deer hunting and join King Arthur’s Army.

If you are unsure of the tales of King Arthur or Robin Hood take a seat and watch our hilarious puppet shows performed by Major Mustard.

Discover the most gruesome bits of history this weekend with our medieval

Barber- surgeon and a Wise Woman. Find out how illnesses and injuries were treated in the Sixteenth Century.

View different types of weaponry and see what ghastly wounds this equipment could cause; take a look at the living conditions and discover why the people were so smelly. Children are encouraged to take part in our activities and take a piece of gruesome history away with you.

Queen Victoria’s Garden Party

Her Royal Majesty Queen Victoria requests the pleasure of your company at the Avoncroft Victorian Garden Party.

 

Take tea with Queen Victoria or just relax and enjoy a picnic and ices on the lawn whilst watching a game of croquet, and the jugglers.  Those with a little more energy may participate in the Square Dancing and Tug-Of-War.

 

Enjoy the romantic costumes of the era Learn about and experience the lost arts

of quilt making, embroidery, rag rugging, lavender and lace. Try your hand at the coconut shy and sideshows or stretch out under the trees with a game of draughts and a cool glass of lemonade.

It is all things woody this weekend as the Carpenters’ Fellowship holds its Annual Festival.

Watch the axe throwing competition, join in with the talks and discover how timber- framed buildings are constructed.

Apple Day

Join us to explore the story of the apple from pollination to consumption.

In partnership with the Array Fruit Farm there will be numerous local apples on display to taste. There will be beekeepers; composting advice; cider pressing and local produce stands.

Visit the Avoncroft Orchard to see our beautiful cider apple trees and take part in fun apple- themed activities.

 

At 2.30pm you are welcome to attend the Avoncroft Harvest Thanksgiving and Dedication service in Bringsty Mission Church.
